Don’t (Just) Read This – SOPA and PIPA

by Julie Soforenko on January 18, 2012

If you’ve been on the internet today, you’ve probably encountered big websites such as Wikipedia, Mozilla, Craigslist, and Reddit closing their content down today to protest SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) in the House,  and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) in the Senate.  Learn what this legislation means, and what you can do about it.

Many websites, experts, and news teams have explained what these acts are (better than we could) and why they are so dangerous.  It basically has to do with online copyright infringement and piracy, but these acts propose drastic actions that could alter the very structure of the internet. Find out the details here…

DON’T JUST READ – DO SOMETHING

It is your civic duty, your responsibility to let your congressmen know if you oppose this bill.

I was a Political Science major in college. I have always been interested in policy and government. But until today I had never called one of my representatives. It was SO easy. It took me literally 3 minutes to call 3 representatives. So please, take the time to make the call, and protect our right to information and freedom of expression.

HOW TO

On January 18 just go to Wikipedia’s website and put in your zip code. It will come out with the name, phone number, and other contact information of your Congressional Representatives.
(Today and any other days you can use:  http://www.contactingthecongress.org/ )

Next you can use this simple script…

I’m a constituent of Representative __________ and I am calling to express my opposition to the SOPA and PIPA bills.

It’s that easy. You can give your name if you want an update if the representative makes a statement. Or you do not even have to give your name.

It starts with you. Make the call.

Is it also my civic duty and responsibility to let my congressman know if I support the bill?

Absolutely! That is the beauty of the democratic process. This is my opinion, but it is equally important and vital for you to let yours be heard too. Thank you for the clarification!
